James White scored on a 5-yard run in the third overtime Saturday to lift Iowa State to a 44-41 victory over Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
ISU quarterback Steele Jantz led the Cyclones on a late scoring drive to tie the game in regulation, then connected on a fourth-down TD pass at the end of the first overtime to extend the game.
The win snapped a three-game ISU losing streak in the series.

Pick 'ems Panel/Week 2:
Iowa at Iowa State
Marc Morehouse – If they insist on having a trophy, I think Minka Kelly would be good. Iowa 27, Iowa State 14
Mike Hlas – Frankly, I don't see any way in the world that either team loses. Today or ever. And the two teams have the greatest fans in the world. Did I mention corn is the ideal food? Iowa 43, Iowa State 41 (3 OT)
Nick Pugliese –The “We don't need a stinkin' trophy game” goes to the team that still has a conference. Iowa 28, ISU 13
John Campbell – The 2007 “Shaggy Game” (5 Cyclone FGS) still haunts the Head Hawk. But Kirk Ferentz need not worry unless his team plays fumbilitis in Ames. Iowa 28, Iowa State 10
Beth Malicki – I spent a year in Ames one night. Apologies to my boss who's an ISU Alum. I'm under contract so she can't fire me. Iowa 14, ISU 3
Bob Brooks – I spent a year in Ames one night. Apologies to my boss who's an ISU Alum. I'm under contract so she can't fire me. Iowa 14, ISU 3
J.R. Ogden – Rain or dry, trophy or no trophy, Iowa doesn't let this rivalry slip through it hands. Iowa 28, ISU 10
Jeff Johnson – Staying neutral for this one. Coloring my hair black, red and gold. Oh, wait a minute … Iowa 21, Iowa State 17
Rob Gray – Expect a big game from ISU quarterback Steele Jantz, but it won't be enough for the injury-riddled Cyclones. Iowa 28, ISU 24
Jeff Linder – Iowa State's last year in Big 12 before moving to Mountain West/Big East/Conference USA/WAC/whatever. Iowa 20, Iowa State 10
James Steward – Cyclones barely got past a I-AA school at home. Have to go chalk – er, Hawk – here. Iowa 24, ISU 10
Mike Condon – No trophy? No problem for Hawks, no ambush in Ames . Iowa 27, Iowa State 13
Scott Saville – Will the real Steele Jantz please stand up. If Jantz plays like he did in the first three quarters against UNI this game is a blowout. If Jantz plays like he did in the fourth quarter it might be close. Iowa 28 Iowa State 14
John Sears – Black and gold proves to be stronger than Steele. Clones play better, but Hawks make it four straight. Iowa 27, ISU 13
Matthew Shada (from The Gazette's Facebook page) - Iowa makes it four in a row. Iowa 24, ISU 14
Notre Dame at Michigan
Morehouse – I saw the Irish helmets for this game. Thought the green clover was the pedestrian choice. Pink hearts, yellow moons and orange stars would've worked, too. Notre Dame 35, Michigan 31
Hlas – The story that broke late last night about Michigan jumping to the SEC ... wild, huh? Notre Dame 23, Michigan 21
Pugliese – There will be 200,000 people in the big house Saturday night. Michigan 31, Notre Dame 28
Campbell – Notre Dame opens Big Ten action against Michigan. Maybe someday if they get smart in South Bend. Notre Dame 28, Michigan 21
Malicki – This week KCRG combined newsrooms with The Gazette. I've only been “shushed” twice. I'll get my revenge. Notre Dame 50, Michigan 0
Brooks – The Irish debut another QB and they certainly will play better than they did a week ago. But Brady Hoke has distributed his personnel that make Michigan an improved defense. Wolves could have sold 25,000 more tickets for a slight Michigan win. Michigan 19, Notre Dame 18
Ogden – No luck of the Irish this week either. Michigan 17, Notre Dame 10
Johnson – Rumor has it Notre Dame's next national television contract will be with PAX. Michigan 24, Notre Dame 17
Gray - Michigan's Denard Robinson runs wild and Irish Coach Brian Kelly blows another gasket. Still, should be close. Michigan 34, Notre Dame 31
Linder – Tim Brown? Desmond Howard? Where have you gone, guys? Michigan 24, Notre Dame 17.
Steward – It's Week 2 and there's already a QB controversy in South Bend. Brady Hoke's new defense gets the job done. UM 27, ND 20
Condon – Irish eyes will be crying after this visit to the Big House. Michigan 34, Notre Dame 27
Saville – The Irish have something to prove. The Michigan defense looked solid in week one. Michigan 28 Notre Dame 21.
Sears – Irish drop to 0-2, but Lou Holtz still thinks they'll play for the national title. Michigan 31, Notre Dame 24
Shada - Notre Dame slips again. Michigan 28, Notre Dame 17
Alabama at Penn State
Morehouse – Visited Orange Beach on the Alabama Gulf Coast this spring. Someone wrote “Geaux Tigers” on the activities sheet in the condo. By the end of the week, down to a shred that read “Roll Tide.” Alabama 28, Penn State 7
Hlas – The story that broke late last night about Penn State jumping to the Pac-12 ... I did not see that coming. Alabama 10, Penn State 3
Pugliese – t's been 28 years since Bear Bryant died and Joe Pa is still coaching. Alabama 21, Penn State 17
Campbell – This is the no funky uniform game. This is the kind of pre conference games the fans deserve. Alabama 21, Penn State 20
Malicki – Morning producer, Lauren Piekoff, advised me on this pick and babbled about JoePa and rankings ... she should probably be a permanent replacement for me in this column. Alabama 31, Penn State 14
Brooks – The Bear is not around but Paterno is, which means much ado about nothing. However, 'Bama has better personnel and a better defense. Alabama 24, Penn State 21
Ogden – I long for the days for Bear Bryant and Joe Paterno. Oh, wait a minute ... Alabama 14, Penn State 10
Johnson – No jokes about NCAA probation or JoePa here. I swear. Alabama 31, Penn State 17
Gray – SEC vs. Big Ten. Hmm. I'll take the Crimson Tide's two quarterbacks over the Nittany Lions' duo behind center. Alabama 37, Penn State 20
Linder – BTN televised replay of 1987 ‘Bama-Penn State game the other night. Paterno looked old then. Alabama 30, Penn State 14.
Steward – Bama has 10 starters back from the best defense in the country last year. Penn State's offense? Not exactly best in the country. Bama 28, PSU 9
