On Iowa by Marc Morehouse

Marc Morehouse
Hi, I'm Marc Morehouse. I've covered sports for more than 15 years, mostly in Eastern Iowa. I've had Hayden Fry call me "Mike." I've had Chad Greenway call me "Mr." And Kirk Ferentz will occasionally call me "bleep." (Kidding, kidding.)

I have fun with the blog. I’ve made some great connections with a few readers and hope to continue that. Ultimately, I want to know what you want to know.

Thanks for reading.

This is the Twitter feed of Kirk Bohls, who's covered Texas for the Austin American-Statesmen since when I was in college. I was told today that Greg Davis is "a super nice guy" and "transparent." So, I'm guessing Bohls has an "in" with Davis and this is so.

Nothing official from Iowa on Davis

So, there’s the tweet. Kirk Bohls has covered Texas for the Austin American-Statesman for several years. He tweeted that Greg Davis, who served as the Longhorns’ offensive coordinator for 12 seasons before resigning in 2010, has accepted the offensive coordinator position at Iowa. Officially from the University of Iowa, coach Kirk Ferentz is on [...]

Hello, my name is . . . walk ons

Here’s the list as far as I know. Remember walk-ons are a little different. Iowa can’t announce they’re on the team because nothing is signed. Preferred walk-ons are allowed to practice during August camp. The regular sort of walk-on isn’t allowed to practice until school begins (last week of August this year?). Jalen Chambers [...]

Cameron Wilson is among a small army of wide receivers Iowa brought in with the 2012 class. The Hawkeyes lost Marvin McNutt and will lose Keenan Davis after next season, so WR is an obvious need.

Hello, my name is . . . Cameron Wilson 1

By any measure, Cameron Wilson is a good get. He had 14 offers, including West Virginia, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Purdue and Illinois. BC and Illinois were the other two finalists. No, Ohio State didn’t offer the Ohio native. The 6-1, 195-pounder picked the Hawkeyes in June and didn’t look back. “Certain schools made me feel more [...]

Future Iowa DT Jaleel Johnson on the left and future Iowa OT Ryan Ward on the right. We'll call them big and biggerer.

Hello, my name is . . . Ryan Ward

Ryan Ward’s commitment might end up being the most meaningful for the 2012 class. Iowa beat several direct competitors (Michigan State, Northwestern) to get the 6-5, 275-pounder from Providence Catholic (New Lenox, Ill.), a school that also produced Iowa all-American OL Eric Steinbach. Northwestern had an in, too, with Ward’s brother, Patrick, has started 26 [...]

Defensive end Daumantas Venckus picked Iowa over Navy and Colorado State. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Cypress Bay High School (Weston, Fla.) prep will be an all-name team staple.

Hello, my name is . . . Daumantas Venckus-Cucchiara

DVC started playing football at 10 years old as a way to help learn English 3

DOE-mahn-tis VINS-koos koo-CHAR-uh. That’s what will appear in the pronunciation guide for the next four or five years at Iowa. This one might give radio guys around the Big Ten a stroke. Daumantas Venckus-Cucchiara is a 6-4, 220-pound defensive end from Cypress Bay, Fla. He’s already made ESPN.com’s Big Ten recruiting all-name team. So, [...]

Hello, my name is . . . Laron Taylor

Two-time team captain led his school to its first ever state championship last fall

The Hawkeyes picked up a pair of commitments from Detroit’s Cass Tech High School — safety Ruben Lile and linebacker Laron Taylor. Cass Tech won the school’s first Division I state championship with a landslide 49-13 victory over Detroit Catholic Central. Cass Tech was just the second team from the Detroit Public School League to [...]

Iowa native Cody Sokol played quarterback for the Scottsdale Community College Fightin' Artichokes before enrolling at Iowa.

Hello, my name is . . . Cody Sokol

Des Moines native will likely redshirt, then compete with Rudock in 2013

Winter hit Iowa just as the new junior-college quarterback and former Fighting Artichoke landed in Iowa City in mid-January. But it’s OK, Cody Sokol was born in Des Moines and lived there through elementary school. Plus, he’s signed his national letter of intent and will begin his career with the Hawkeyes this semester, so [...]

A year at prep school paid off with a scholarship to Iowa for wide receiver Tevaun Smith.

Hello, my name is . . . Tevaun Smith

Track star's got some wheels, eh?

Tevaun Smith attended Chaminade College High School in Toronto before attending Kent, a prep school, last season hoping to gain more attention from FBS schools. It worked. Smith, 6-0, 185 pounds, picked the Hawkeyes over Connecticut and Temple. He’s also the second player in the 2012 class with origins in Canada. Defensive lineman Faith Ekakitie also [...]

Iowa Western center Eric Simmons signed with the Hawkeyes in December. He's transferring in from Iowa Western, a junior college in Council Bluffs that is becoming an FBS football haven. (Iowa Western photo)

Hello, my name is . . . Eric Simmons

6-3, 295-pounder enrolled at Iowa this semester and has four years to play three

Iowa wasn’t in the market for a junior college offensive lineman. Eric Simmons just completed his freshman season at Iowa Western Community College, so he was sort of on the market but not totally. Iowa assistant coach Reese Morgan offered a scholarship in December, Simmons accepted and signed and is now on the UI campus. “I [...]
