Another round of snow — this one expected to start Thursday afternoon into the evening — could make for a difficult evening commute in Eastern Iowa.
The National Weather Service’s Quad Cities bureau is reporting more snow is expected Thursday afternoon and evening, between 1 and 9 p.m.
While a map published Wednesday by NWS shows 1 to 4 inches of snow accumulation is possible across Eastern Iowa, meteorologists said they have low confidence in those amounts “due to potential shift in storm track.”
Drivers are advised to allow for extra travel time and check road conditions at 511ia.org before traveling.
In addition to the Thursday snow, NWS meteorologists are forecasting snow moving across Eastern Iowa Saturday into Saturday night. According to information published Wednesday morning, there is a 40-60 percent chance of at least 2 inches of snow in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, the Quad Cities and areas between.
Bitterly cold air also is forecast to spread across the state Friday night through Sunday night.
According to forecasts published Wednesday, the high temperature in Cedar Rapids on Saturday will be 8 degrees, and Sunday’s high will be just 2 degrees. Wind chills will be much colder, according to NWS, reaching minus 26 degrees early Sunday morning.
People are advised to take precautions to protect against the cold. This includes:
- Stay indoors if possible;
- Bring pets indoors;
- Cover all exposed skin if you go outside;
- Check on elderly neighbors and family;
- Limit time spent in the cold and
- Have a working carbon monoxide detector.
Temperatures will rebound early next week. Forecasts predict high temperatures in the mid-30s by Tuesday.
