DES MOINES — How does one ignore pain?
“You have to have tunnel vision,” Quinton Alexander said. “It was good enough to end on a good note.”
A championship note.
Alexander raced to the Class 4A boys’ title in the 110-meter hurdles at the state track and field meet Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
His final clocking: 13.65 seconds.
“I knew I had something to prove,” said Alexander, who will continue his track career at Iowa Western Community College. “I didn’t have the best prelim, and my hip was hurting. I was icing it as much as possible.”
But when the stakes were highest, Alexander delivered, and repeated.
Speaking of repeating ... Ankeny won its second consecutive 4A boys’ championship with 100 points. Cedar Falls (78) and West Des Moines Dowling (66.5) were the other trophy teams.
Cedar Rapids Prairie was ninth, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 10th.
Kennedy managed three top-three finishes Saturday. The Cougars were runners-up in the 400-meter relay, third in the shuttle hurdle relay. Dawson Dougherty was third in the 100-meter dash.
The shuttle was extraordinarily fast: Ankeny won it in 56.06 seconds, followed by Waukee Northwest (56.16) and Kennedy (56.55).
“For three of us, it was the first time we’ve been here,” Jackson Goslin said. “Three of us will be back next year, but (senior) Ryan Bartels was our heart and soul.”
Bartels said, “We got the school record this year, and I don’t think it will be broke for a while.”
Iowa City West’s Moustafa Tiea was third in the 800 meters.
