Jan. 21, 2012 3:44 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS -- Some bizarre circumstances moved Kaleigh Sieck in the starting lineup.Saturday, she proved she belonged.Sieck scored 11 points to help Class 3A sixth-ranked South Tama defeat No. 9 Union, 41-31, in a non-conference girls' basketball game at Rivalry Saturday at Washington High School.A state-tournament team last year, the Trojans (14-1) learned Monday that Dia Keahna -- the team's second-leading scorer -- was departing the program. In moved Sieck, and on moved the Trojans (14-1)."It's not a big issue," Smith said. "We just have to keep playing like we'd play any time."Saturday was South Tama's first with its adjusted roster. They haven't lost much defensively."I knew everybody would step up," said STC Coach Nate Roberts. "They've been playing together since third grade."The Trojans scored the final two baskets of the first half for a 20-17 lead, and maintained the upper hand the rest of the way.Iowa State recruit Madison Baier - a 6-foot-4 post -- added 11 points for the Trojans.Union's Payton Hilton more than matched her in the paint, registering 17 points and nine rebounds. The Knights fell to 11-2.
