Local sports radio in Cedar Rapids got a lot less local this week.
KGYM-1600 ESPN has dropped a pair of long-running sports talk shows that originated from its studio. The Todd Brommelkamp Show and the Gym Class did their last shows this week.
Brommelkamp had been an on-air personality at KGYM for 14 years. His show most recently had aired from 6:30 to 9 a.m.
“I was fortunate enough to be in a place where I was allowed to do the format the way I wanted, how I wanted.” Brommelkamp said. “Not everyone enjoyed my approach, but the people who did are missing something today, and that’s unfortunate.”
The Gym Class, which aired from 3 to 4 p.m., originated in 2006 with Scott Unash and Mark Dukes, who hosted it for the duration. Unash began in radio in 1989, and became KCRG-AM’s sports director in 1991. He has had a local talk show since 1997. He has done play-by-play of local high school sporting events since 1991 and will continue to do so on crmlivesports.com.
Dukes was the sports editor of The Gazette from 1984 to 1998. He became a full-time sports writer there in 1978.
“I never aspired to be on radio. It found me,” Dukes said. “I’m grateful for 18 1/2 years and will miss it.”
KGYM will continue local show “Spencer on Sports” with Spencer Wagen from 4 to 6 p.m., weekdays.
The reason for the changes were purely for financial reasons, said Julie Hein, the CEO of KZIA, Inc., which has KGYM among its local stations.
“Like a lot of media, including yours, and national TV and local TV, restaurants, factories, we are experiencing some economic changes,” Hein said. “I hope there is a rebound.
“Scott Unash and Mark Dukes have been legends in this market for decades and have done amazing things for sports in the Corridor. Todd Brommelkamp, to me, was a breath of fresh air and a real leader in talking about the Hawkeyes and all kinds of great things.
“I adore all of them and I am forever a fan of all three men.”
