Mary Jo Murray, 84, a longtime resident of Marion, passed away Jan. 15, 2023, at CountryHouse Residence in Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion by Fr. David O’Connor. A private burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the church after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Teahen Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Mary Jo is survived by her children, Pat (Dave) Airy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Kathy (Scott) Anderson of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Mike (Beth) Murray of Coralville, Iowa, and Terry (Patrice) Murray of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Megan, Melissa, Chad, Beth, Julie, Steve, Jack, Kelli, Brittany and P.J.; and six great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her daughter, Debbie Landowski; her parents, Bernard and Lela Moore; and brother, Jim Moore.
Mary Jo was born on Jan. 20, 1938, in Oelwein, Iowa. She attended St. Patrick’s School in Cedar Rapids and was a graduate of Mount Mercy College. On June 17, 1961, she was joined in marriage with Jim Murray and together they had five children. Mary Jo worked as a secretary for an architectural firm and for Rockwell Collins. She enjoyed playing bridge and sewing. She was an avid quilter, donating many quilts to charity. Her love of reading brought her frequently to the Marion Library where she volunteered her time. She also volunteered with Mercy Auxiliary. A strong Catholic, she was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Church in Marion. She was a devoted Notre Dame fan and proud of her Irish heritage.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marion Public Library Foundation, Mount Mercy University, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
