CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids city leaders have approved an additional $7.2 million in road work along Mount Vernon Road SE.
City Council members this week unanimously approved the plans, specifications and form of contract for the project, which will go out for bids this week. Construction is slated to begin by April 30.
The project will cover improvements along the major east-west road between 20th and 26th streets. The work is part of the city’s sales-tax supported “Paving for Progress” initiative.
The project will include patching concrete, doing an asphalt overlay and replacing curbs and gutters. Driveways within the project area also will be rebuilt to meet current design criteria.
Further, sidewalk and accessibility improvements will be made, including a new sidewalk on the west side of 25th Street between Mount Vernon Road and Grant Wood Terrace to improve school route accessibility.
