IOWA CITY — Iowa City Council incumbents swept the City Council election, according to unofficial results Tuesday night.
Longtime Mayor Bruce Teague was re-elected by 37.02 percent of voters. Teague has served as mayor since 2020 and has been on the council since 2018.
More than 31.1 percent of voters re-elected at-large council member Megan Alter to her second term.
In the District B seat, Shawn Harmsen was re-elected after securing 53.78 percent of the vote.
In Iowa City, the mayor is elected by council members every two years, when a new council meets at the beginning of the calendar year.
Voters needed to choose three Iowa City Council members: two at-large seats and a representative of District B, which includes the east side of Iowa City. Each seat is a four-year term that expires in 2030.
Other at-large candidates were Clara Reynen, a graduate student at the University of Iowa, who received 18.18 percent of the votes; and Iowa Department of Transportation planner Newman Abuissa, who received 13 percent of the votes.
The other District B candidate, Amy Hospodarsky, received 45.54 percent of the votes. Hospodarsky was seeking her first term on the council.
Iowa City voters also overwhelmingly approved a 1 percent local-option sales tax, with 84 percent in favor of it. Revenues from the tax will be used for a mix of property tax relief, affordable housing efforts, city infrastructure and community nonprofit partnerships.
Results are considered unofficial until certified by county and state boards of canvass.
