Linn-Mar freshman Caite Schaffel will be No. 1 seed at state in 200 individual medley

Linn-Mar's Caite Schaffel earned the No. 1 seed in the 200-yard individual medley for this week's girls’ state swimming and diving meet.

The Lion freshman won the regional title on Saturday in Ames with a time of 2:06.27, helping Linn-Mar to a second-place finish in the meet. Host Ames took the team title with 476 points, followed by the Lions with 414.5.

Schaffel's seed time for state is 2:05.70. Times throughout the season are used to determine seeds, but a swimmer can only swim at state in the events they competed in at the regional meet. Schaffel finished second in the 100 breaststroke and has the No. 2 seed time at state in that event.

Freshman teammate Teresa Zhang won the 100 backstroke in 57.55 and has the third seed in that event. The Lions’ 200 medley relay team of Zhang, Schaffel, Mackenzie Tristan and Addison Luck won the event in 1:48.79 to earn a No. 3 state seed.

At Waukee Northwest, the host school took the title with 524 points. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (336) and Cedar Rapids Washington (307) took third and fourth, respectively.

Kennedy's Lilly Anctil won the 50 freestyle in 24.23, earning a No. 5 state seed. Washington's 200 medley relay team of Jada Ripke, Lily Belle Barker, Zoey Jones and Maija Wickum finished first in 1:51.19 and also will be seeded fifth at state.

Iowa City West took second in the team race at Marshalltown. Waukee won with 399 points to edge West (390). Iowa City High was fourth with 266.

West freshman Nora Landon was a double winner, taking the 50 freestyle (24.39) and 100 butterfly (58.28). Landon will be seeded fifth in the butterfly and seventh in the freestyle. West was runner-up in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Freshman Ariana Swanson took second in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.

City High freshman Ava Remme won the 200 IM (2:15.12) and 500 freestyle (5:12.01). She is seeded seventh in the 500 free.

At Mason City, Decorah finished fourth with 249.5. West Des Moines Dowling won with 551. Decorah's Elizabeth Bucksa took third in both the 200 and 500 freestyle and was part of the Vikings' third-place finishers in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The state meet is set for Thursday and Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center at the University of Iowa. Preliminaries will be held at noon on Thursday with the diving finals set for 3 p.m. Swimming finals will be at noon on Friday.
