Cedar Rapids Xavier look to defend championship as top-seed

The first season of fall girls’ tennis is one week away from the beginning of postseason play.

Regional singles and doubles pairings were released late Tuesday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Play at 16 sites, eight each in Classes 2A and 1A, will be held next Wednesday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Defending Class 1A state champion and top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier will be part of a nine-team field at Grinnell. The Saints feature two-time defending state singles champion Gabi Fleming. Area schools Marion, Mount Vernon, South Tama also are in the regional

No. 2 Decorah will host a nine-team field. Other area schools in the regional include Maquoketa and Western Dubuque.

In Class 2A, Iowa City West will host a field of non-area schools that includes No. 7 Clinton and No. 8 Pleasant Valley.

Linn-Mar also will serve as a host. Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Prairie and Iowa City Liberty are included in the regional.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy is in the North Scott district. Cedar Rapids Jefferson will play at West Des Moines Valley while Iowa City High will compete at Marshalltown.

All regional champions and runners-up advance to the state tournament, set for Oct. 1-2. Class 1A teams will play at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City. The Class 2A meet will be at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
