Iowa player wears Kinnick's jersey number?
Jan. 2, 2010 5:11 pm
Junior wide receiver Joe Audlehelm walked off the practice field at Barry (Fla.) University on Saturday wearing the most hallowed number in Iowa football history.
Audlehelm, a walk-on from Van Wert, Iowa (Central Decatur High School) wore No. 24, the retired jersey number of Nile Kinnick, Iowa's only Heisman Trophy winner. Kinnick was killed June 2, 1943 in World War II after his plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean during a training flight. The football stadium bears his name.
As you can imagine, Audlehelm (5-foot-8, 175 pounds) won't wear the jersey number in the game. He's listed as jersey No. 89.
