IOWA CITY — Former Iowa athletics director Bob Bowlsby and offensive line standout Brandon Scherff are among the 2025 inductees into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame, the athletics department announced Thursday.
Current field hockey coach Lisa Cellucci also is part of the 2025 class. The rest of the class includes track athlete Justin Austin, softball player Lisa Birocci Banse, golfer Elena Callas King, wrestler Brad Smith and swimmer Tom Williams.
Bowlsby served as Iowa’s athletics director from 1991-2006 and was responsible for the hires of current football coach Kirk Ferentz and men’s wrestling coach Tom Brands. The Waterloo native went on to be the AD at Stanford from 2006-12 before becoming the commissioner of the Big 12 Conference from 2012-22.
Scherff was the 2014 recipient of the Outland Trophy, which goes to the best interior lineman in college football. He also was a unanimous All-American in 2014, a second-team All-American in 2013 and a 2015 first-round draft pick en route to becoming a five-time Pro Bowler in the NFL.
Cellucci was a three-time All-American and four-time all-Big Ten honoree during her playing days at Iowa. She led the Hawkeyes to two Big Ten regular-season titles and three NCAA Elite Eight appearances and remains the program’s all-time saves leader more than two decades later.
Smith won the 142-pound NCAA individual title in 1976 and helped the Hawkeyes claim their first two team titles (1975, 1976) in program history. Smith coached high school wrestling at Lisbon and City High and is the winningest coach in Iowa high school wrestling history. He has the most dual meet wins, most traditional state titles, most individual state champions and the most four-time state champions in state history.
Austin and Williams were each five-time All-Americans in their respective sports.
Banse was a two-time All-American and the Big Ten’s 2003 pitcher of the year. King was the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) state tournament champion in 1978 and earned recognition on the Big Ten all-tournament team in 1979 and 1980.
