Ex-Hawkeye Mitch King leaves Titans for Colts?
Jan. 30, 2010 1:24 pm
FoxSports.com reports former Iowa defensive tackle Mitch King, the 2008 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, has signed a future contract with the Colts beginning with the 2010 season.
King was undrafted last year and signed a free-agent contract with Tennessee. At the time King's agent, Richard Rosa, told me the offers were “overwhelming" and "ultimately, Mitch got to pick the spot.”
“We weren't dealing with scouts,” Rosa said after the draft. “We were dealing with coaches, general managers … at least two team presidents called him personally and said, ‘That's a guy we have to have.' There was tremendous interest for him.”
Tennessee and King seemed a good fit. Although King was considered small by NFL standards for defensive tackles -- 6-foot-1, 280 pounds -- he developed a relationship with Tennessee defensive line coach Jim Washburn during last year's Senior Bowl.
"We were surprised when he went undrafted,” Titans scout Mike Ackerley said after the draft. “Mitch is a high-energy, high-motor player. He is aggressive at the defensive tackle spot and a really good football player.”
King played sparingly in training camp, was released and signed to Tennessee's practice squad on Sept. 6. He was placed on Tennessee's injured reserve 17 days later.
