What to know: After four consecutive games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the Hawkeyes head on the road for their first road conference game since facing Michigan State a month ago.
The Hawkeyes won all four of their most recent games, including a 13-point win over UCLA on Sunday. The win was Iowa’s second conference win of the year, with both Big Ten victories by a double-digit margin.
Minnesota is also 2-1 in conference play, picking up its first ranked win against then-No. 22 Indiana at Williams Arena on Dec. 3 and its lone Big Ten loss was to No. 6 Purdue on Dec. 10. The Golden Gophers average 73.5 points per game, while Iowa averages 80.7 points per game.
Minnesota is led by Cade Tyson, a senior guard/forward standing at 6-foot-7. Tyson is approaching 1,000 career points, currently sitting at 993. He averages 22.1 points per game so far, leading Minnesota as one of three players averaging double figures. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson and Isaac Asuma are the other two players in double figures, scoring 13 and 10.4 points per game, respectively.
Iowa lost its most recent bout against Minnesota last season, falling in Iowa City in a five-point loss. Prior to last season, the Hawkeyes had won six-straight matchups between the two teams.
Tuesday’s matchup is also a battle of first-year head coaches, with Iowa head coach Ben McCollum and Minnesota bench leader Niko Medved facing off in their first year as Big Ten coaches. They both have previous head coaching experience at Drake, but the two haven’t crossed paths as head coaches. McCollum, however, has seen some of Medved’s assistants before.
“They've got good pieces for what they do,” McCollum said. “Pretty patterned offense. Obviously kind of the Princeton-style offense, so very difficult to defend. They run it sharp. They're pretty physical defensively. I don't think they probably get enough credit for how good they are defensively, and playing with a lot of energy and playing really well right now.”
