What to know: Iowa led by as many as 13 points in the first half but ultimately fell short Thursday night at No. 4 Iowa State, 66-62. The Hawkeyes shot 51 percent from the field and outrebounded the Cyclones, 31-28.
The difference in the game came from the free-throw line. Iowa State went 17 of 23 to Iowa’s 3 of 5. In its last three games, Iowa has shot 34 free throws to opponents’ 86.
Tavion Banks led Iowa with 14 points. Cam Manyawu and Bennett Stirtz had 10 apiece, with Stirtz (Iowa’s leading scorer this season) going just 3 of 11 from the field.
Freshman Tate Sage impressed off the bench with eight points and four rebounds in a career-high 25 minutes played.
“He doesn’t have a lot of fear,” said Iowa Coach Ben McCollum. “I think he’s too young to even know. He just kind of goes out, fights and competes. We saw that a little bit in high school, but we didn’t think it was going to be that good. That’s a big-time environment for him to be a big-time freshman. He did nothing but win in his high school career, has a lot of confidence in himself, he’s coachable, and you kind of see the result.”
The Hawkeyes are 17th in the nation with a .516 field goal percentage. That includes an effective field-goal percentage of .593.
Western Michigan has won two games in a row, though it hasn’t played since Dec. 6 (an 83-73 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville). The Broncos have played one other Big Ten opponent this season, that being Ohio State, which beat WMU, 91-58.
Western Michigan’s leading scorer is guard Jalen Griffith (16.3 points per game). He also leads the team in assists and steals.
