What to know: Iowa State shocked top-ranked Purdue at West Lafayette, Ind., this past Saturday, 81-58. It was Purdue’s first non-conference loss at home since 2019 and its second-worse non-conference loss ever at Mackey Arena.
The Cyclones shot 54.1 percent from the field in the game, including going 11 of 23 from 3-point range. Milan Momcilovic had a team-high 20 points, one of four starters to score in double figures.
He leads Iowa State in scoring this season at 18.3 points per game. Forward Joshua Jefferson is next at 17.6.
The Cyclones have four starters who average double-figure points. Freshman guard Killyan Toure has been a revelation, averaging 12 points per game.
Point guard Tamin Lipsey returned to play after a three-game injury absence. He had nine points, eight assists and five rebounds in 31 minutes.
“When Tamin Lipsey has been out because of an injury, he does such a good job of staying involved, engaged in what the team is doing,” said Iowa State Coach T.J. Otzelberger. “That allows him to return seamlessly.”
Iowa is coming off an 83-64 win this past Saturday at home against Maryland. That evened the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten Conference record at 1-1.
Iowa lost last week at Michigan State, 72-51, in what was its first true road game this season. It will be interesting to see how the team responds in a similarly hostile environment here.
“I think (that game) is going to help a lot,” said Iowa Coach Ben McCollum. “I think part of it is just how we were, our staff included, just with the preparation piece of it (are) making sure you don’t overthink it. Try to grip the game, because a lot of times, we are able to grip games, control it pretty good. But a lot of that requires a lot of communication. So when you’re not able to communicate, how do you grip the game without communication?
“So just learning from that experience (should help). We had a good game plan going into Michigan State, we just didn’t execute it just looking back at it. We need to be able to execute this one.”
While Iowa State has shown great balance offensive, Iowa has just one player who scores in double digits. That, of course, is senior point guard Bennett Stirtz at 18.8 per game.
The Hawkeyes did have four double-figure scorers against Maryland, an encouraging sign. They included forward Cam Manyawu and freshman guard Tate Sage with 12 apiece.
Sage’s effort came off the bench. Forward Cooper Koch added three 3-pointers and 11 points.
