What to know: This is the last game before things get serious for the Hawkeyes in a hurry and they begin what could be five straight games against high-major opponents.
Iowa is coming off a 99-70 home win over Southeast Missouri State Tuesday. Fifty of the Hawkeyes’ points came from non-starters. Iowa shot 61.2 percent from the field, improving its season average to 57.9 percent. That ranked first in the nation before Wednesday night’s games.
Freshman center Trevin Jirak of West Des Moines had a strong game, with 10 points in 21 minutes. So did forward Cam Manyawu, who made all four of his shots and scored 12 points in 17 minutes.
The Hawkeyes had 11 steals Tuesday, raising their season-average to a Big Ten-best 8.8 per game. Iowa’s 40.5 percent from 3-point distance is third in the conference.
As of Wednesday morning, Chicago State was 355th out of the 365 Division I teams in the Kenpom.com ratings, which still put it ahead of two of its fellow Northeast Conference members.
This is the Cougars’ 42nd year in Division I. They have had three winning seasons, and just one (2008-09) between 1986-87 and the present. They were 4-28 last season and are 308-884 in their D-I history.
Though they’ve been outscored by an average of 20 points per game, they’ve competed lately, They lost 67-63 to city rival UIC on Nov. 15, and led Minnesota with seven minutes left Tuesday before losing, 66-54.
