CORALVILLE - The special event features 13 total matches, consisting of three high school bouts, two women’s matches and eight men’s bouts.
I will have updates from most matches. I will have to chase after interviews at times but will try to be back to update each.
Just being in the arena before things start there is a different vibe to many wrestling. I assume the “Beat The Street” series has a similar atmosphere but there’s a smooth party vibe here. I’m digging it.
NOW FOR THE MAIN EVENT
59.5 KG: SPENCER LEE VS. MASANOSUKE ONO
Lee comes out to the Pokemon theme and loud roar from the crowd. He’s in a black-and-gold singlet while Ono is in a gold singlet.
Ono strikes first with the step out. Lee encouraged to show more action. Shortly after, Ono forces another step out for 2-0 lead.
Action on the edge leads to a third step out and Ono leads, 3-0.
Ono leads 3-0 at the break. Not sure what happened that the crowd booed. Tom Brands seemed a little unhappy after the break.
Ono called for being passive. Caution call and Lee with a point. He pulls within 3-1. 1:55 to go now.
Ono with a nice sweep single but Lee counters and fends it off to face Ono. No points. Another caution and 1 pulls Lee within a point. Ono holds on holds on to win, 3-2.
76 KG: DAVID CARR DEC. DAICHI TAKATANI, 10-7
David Carr with a huge win over Olympic silver medalist Takatani, who beat Kyle Dake. Carr led early and maintained his lead at the end. Takatani very gracious in defeat, too. He got applause from the crowd.
Very impressive performance from Carr.
92 KG: ZAHID VALENCIA VS. TRENT HIDLAY
Zahid was one of my favorites to watch during his time at Arizona State. Would have loved to see him and Brooks go at it again live. We’ll see the challenge Hidlay presents.
Valencia with the opening takedown and 2-0 lead. Valencia adds a step out for a 3-0 lead after the first period. Not a lot of action in that first period.
Valencia adds two late takedowns for a 7-0 win.
72 KG: BRYCE ANDONIAN VS. AUSTIN GOMEZ
Gomez was put on the clock and then scores exposure from the front headlock position. It holds to the end of the first with Gomez up 2-0. Gomez with a takedown and two more right at the start of the first.
Scramble does lead to exposure or takedown but a step out and 5-0 lead. Gomez with a takedown and 7-0 lead.
Gomez ends it with a takedown and gut wrench. He wins 11-0.
62 KG: AUSTIN DESANTO VS. SETH GROSS
DeSanto is a former Hawkeye All-American and member of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. Gross started at Iowa before going on to SDSU and Wiscosnin. DeSanto comes out to “Wild Thing” and I like it.
Gross forces a step out for a 1-0 lead. DeSanto in on a single and elevates the leg but may have lost track where he was at and steps out. Gross leads 2-0.
Flurry on the edge at the end of the first but no points. Gross leads 2-0 at the break.
DeSanto attacks but Gross is able to fend him off and then exposes DeSanto’s back fro 4-0 lead. Gross does it again after a restart and then adds four points late for 10-0 tech.
Closer than score would indicate. Some good flurries. Gross is crafty and was able to get neutral expsoures to pull away late.
Just dawned on me the latest one should be on top so NATE JACKSON VS. KENNEDY MONDAY AT 86 KG IS A GOOD ONE TO START THIS WAY.
Jackson with a nice single and quick finish for a takedown and 2-0 lead in the opening minute.
Jackson shoots in and comes up to a bodylock, but it’s Monday that is able to block the knee and take Jackson feet-to-back for four points.
Jackson responds with with step out and takedown. Monday with a step out. Tied 5-5 with a little more than a minute left in the first.
Jackson up, 7-5, at the break.
Monday shoots in but Jackson counters for a takedown (almost got exposure) for a 9-5 lead.
Fun match with lots of action. Nate Jackson wins, 11-7.
First match is West Branch’s Ethan Humphrey against Cruzer Dominguez. Humphrey is coming off a third-place finishat the Class 1A state wrestling tournament in Des Moines last week.
Dominguez scores first with a step out and then adds a takedown with two more turns for a 7-0 lead. Dominguez with a couple more turns for an 11-0 technical superiority.
Next up is Bettendorf’s Jake Knight against Abdi Unle. Knight scires a takedown off the whistle. After restart on their feet, Knight with a big 4-point throw for a 6-0 lead.
Unle (2-time Fargo AA and 2-time Nebraska champ) has answered with a step out and takedown . 6-3 Knight.
Knight with a high crotch takedown. He added two exposure but Unle fights back for a couple turns and now it’s 10-8 Knight at the break.
Crowd is pretty reserved. Not a full house. About half full but hard telling because there are people watching from railing and not from seats.
Unle with a takedown with a minute left for 11-10 lead. Lots of torque on a lace but Knight prevents a turn. Back to feet for :35
Knight with a turn from a front headlock in the final seconds for a 12-11 win. What a finish?!
Lincoln Jipp with technical superiority of Riley Johnson. He scored four with a feet-to-back move early and dominated from there, ending it with another 4-point move. Challenge was unsuccessful, leading to another point for Jipp in a 14-0 win.
That does it for the high school matches. Nathan Tomasello and Daniel DeShazer will kick off the main card.
Bo Bassett addressing the Hawkeye dominated crowd. Pledged to always do his best and plans to light up the scoreboard for the Hawkeye fans.
Trailer for the doc "LadyHawks: The first season" looks pretty compelling.
62 KG: DANIEL DESHAZER VS. NATHAN TOMASELLO
Tomasello with an opening takedown for 2-0 lead. DeShazer put on the clock. Doesn’t score in the 30-second stretch and Tomasello with a point, which gives him a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Tomasello was called for passivity but then answers with a takedown and 5-0 lead. Tomasello added another late takedown for a 7-0 win.
97 KG: MARCUS COLEMAN VS. JAY AIELLO
Former Iowa State two-time All-American and Ames 3-time state champion Marcus Coleman up against Jay Aiello, who is a U20 World Team member. Aiello with Pennsylvania RTC. Coleman training with Cyclone Wrestling Club.
Coleman on the clock. Doesn’t score so Aiello scores a point and adds a takedown and two for exposure. Coleman reversal and Aiello leads, 5-1.
Aiello with a push out and he leads 6-1 after the first.
The crowd is really tame. I expected more of a response from the crowd. Mostly hushed murmurs except when Bader encouraged them to make noise and they did.
A little gasp when Aiello gets two more exposure to increase his lead to 8-1. Aiello added a couple more takedowns for a 12-1 technical fall.
62 KG: XOCHITL MOTA-PETTIS VS. MELANIE NAHOMI JIMENEZ
Our first women's match of the night.Mota-Pettis with the opening point on the shot clock violation but Jimenez evens the score with a step out. Jimenez with a single and cuts across to score the first takedown. Jimenez leads 3-1 at the break.
Jimenez shoots on a double and drives Mota-Pettis to her back for four points. She takes a 7-1 lead midway through the second period.
That’s how it ends. Jimenez, representing Mexico, with the win.
