Cole Green is quite a QB4 for North Scott football team
Senior, who didn’t even play last season, ran for 159 yards and a touchdown and three two TD passes as his team beat Cedar Rapids Washington, 38-16, Thursday night at Kingston Stadium

CEDAR RAPIDS - The quarterback wore jersey number 27, which usually means he wasn’t originally intended to be the quarterback.
That indeed was the case for North Scott’s Cole Green. The senior didn’t play football at all last season, only going out because first-year Lancers head coach Tony Stewart did a good sales pitch on him.
Stewart needed a kicker and wanted Green to be it.
“I originally was not going to play and just kind of focus on wrestling,” Green said, after North Scott beat Cedar Rapids Washington, 38-16, Thursday night at Kingston Stadium. “But I really like Coach Stew, and he convinced me to come out and kick. Then that kind of turned out to be this.”
“This” is quarterbacking. One candidate for this season’s starting job broke his leg over the summer, two more are part of a group of 12 players who were suspended for this game and North Scott’s opener last week against Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Green essentially is QB4 for the Lancers, but what a QB4. He ran his team’s read-option offense expertly, rushing for 159 yards and a touchdown and throwing for two touchdowns.
And he handled all kicking chores, too: making all five extra points and 20-yard field goal.
“That kid is a phenomenal human being,” Stewart said. “He loves his teammates, and he did it for them.”
“I have really great coaches and teammates that really support me,” Green said. “Even last week (a 31-0 loss), it wasn’t the greatest week for me, and they stuck with me no matter what. We have unconditional love for each other.”
Running back Gage Wagner added 85 yards rushing and two TDs for North Scott, as he and Green ran effectively behind a big Lancers offensive line. Washington (1-1) actually outgained North Scott in the game, 354-344, but three turnovers and some other miscues foiled its chance to start the season 2-0.
Quarterback Grady McGuire rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown and threw for 203 and a TD. Washington fell behind in the first half, 17-7, but Logan Barton’s 35-yard field goal made it a one-score game late in the second quarter and Washington used a long pass play to get back into Barton’s range on the final play of the half.
But a false-start penalty made the attempt 44 yards instead of 39, and it was missed short and left. That kind of a night in many ways for the Warriors.
Washington then went three-and-out offensively to begin the second half, North Scott countered with a TD, Washington fumbled and North Scott took advantage of that for another quick touchdown. That was ballgame.
“It was us shooting ourselves in the foot,” said Washington Coach Eric Addy. “Their game plan wasn’t anything that we weren’t prepared for. Credit to them, they executed their game plan better than we executed our game plan. We just didn’t do our jobs straight across the board. We’ve got to be better. Simple as that. Too many mistakes on our end, and they capitalized on our mistakes.”
Addy said he disappointed in his team’s performance, calling it the exact opposite of last week, when Washington beat Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
“Last week to this week was like two totally different teams from an execution standpoint,” he said.
