CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man charged with attempted murder after a shooting Sunday had his first appearance in court Friday and is being held in the Linn County Jail on a $40,000 cash-only bond.
Along with attempted murder, Thomas Vesey, 49, is charged with willful injury resulting in serious injury and possession of a firearm as a felon.
According to a criminal complaint, Vesey shot Lyle Chapman at 4 a.m. Sunday, after a late-night party, and hit him in the face, back and left arm. Police were called to the 300 block of 30th St. Dr. SE following multiple reports of shots fired in the area.
Chapman is in the intensive care unit at the University of Iowa Health Care and has been communicating with police using a dry-erase board, according to the complaint. He reportedly told police that Vesey shot at him and another person as they were leaving the party.
The other individual also identified Vesey as the shooter, but no one else at the party reported witnessing the shooting, the complaint states.
