CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids woman has been charged with attempted murder after police say she shot a man three times on Nov. 8, who is the identical twin brother of her sister’s ex-boyfriend.
Faith Profit, 31, is charged with attempted murder, willful injury resulting in a serious injury, going armed with intent, assault while participating in a felony, use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime, and person ineligible to carry a dangerous weapon.
According to a criminal complaint, Profit approached Joseph Braxton on Nov. 8 outside of his apartment at 1852 A Ave. NE and talked with him briefly before pulling out a gun and pointing it at his face.
Joseph Braxton pushed the gun away from his face and turned away, and Profit fired three shots at him, hitting him in the left arm and under his left armpit. The bullet that hit under his armpit entered his body, causing serious injury that required hospitalization, the complaint states.
According to a search warrant request filed on Nov. 12, Joseph Braxton recognized Profit only as someone he used to work with, but knew her as “Lo.” He told police she asked him about someone, before shooting at him, but he didn’t recognize the name.
Police spoke to Joseph Braxton’s identical twin brother, Joses Braxton, at the hospital, and he told them he’d been going through a bad breakup, and his ex-girlfriend had a sister named “Lo,” who police later determined was Profit, the warrant request states.
At the scene of the shooting, police found two 9 mm shell casings that matched a Canik 9 mm firearm that police believe was the gun Profit used, according to the complaint.
They found the gun in a Silver Ford Edge registered to and being driven by Tatayana Mitchell, who police believe was present on the scene of the shooting and provided the gun to Profit. The car had been seen, on security footage from the apartment where the shooting happened, before the shooting and fleeing with three people inside after the shooting. Mitchell was pulled over in the car about an hour later, but refused to cooperate with the police investigation, the warrant request states.
Mitchell also has been arrested and charged with one count of accessory after the fact.
Profit and Mitchell were both arrested Tuesday, and had their first appearances in court Wednesday. Profit is being held in the Linn County Jail on a $200,000 bond, and Mitchell is being held on a $5,000 bond.
