CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Thursday on charges that he stole more than $10,000 from his grandmother, for whom he was a caretaker and had financial power of attorney.
Gage Lacy, 29, is charged with first-degree theft against an older individual, financial exploitation of an older individual, and caretaker dependent adult abuse by exploitation.
According to a criminal complaint, Lacy’s grandmother was diagnosed with “cognitive impairment that scored in the range of dementia” in 2022 and needed 24/7 supervision for her safety. Lacy became her power of attorney in 2022, and in 2024 he became her financial power of attorney with access to her bank account.
Between March and May of this year, Lacy took advantage of his grandmother’s financial resources and used more than $10,000 from her account for his own personal use, the complaint states.
Lacy was arrested and had his first appearance in court Thursday. He is being held in the Linn County Jail on a $40,000 bond.
