CEDAR RAPIDS - A couple of top-ranked teams are the same. A couple are new.
That’s the way the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s boys basketball poll shook out this week.
The new number ones are in Class 3A (Storm Lake) and 2A (Carroll Kuemper). They both climbed a spot from last week after last week’s number ones (Huxley Ballard in 3A) and Orange City Unity Christian (2A) both lost a game.
For Ballard (14-1), that was for the first time this season, to Adel-DeSoto-Minburn, which moved up to the third spot in 3A. Storm Lake (13-1), featuring University of Nebraska recruit Jaidyn Coon, has not lost to an Iowa team.
Kuemper has a 15-3 record, but its only losses were to ranked teams in 3A (Clear Lake, Carroll) and in 4A (West Des Moines Dowling). Unity Christian (16-2) lost last week to MOC/Floyd Valley, 51-48.
MOC/Floyd Valley joined the 3A rankings this week at 10th. Solon (15-1) dropped from sixth to eighth after incurring its first loss last week, that of the 72-46 variety to Center Point-Urbana (13-3), which inched up to ninth.
Iowa City Regina remains a very solid third in Class 2A, with Union Community seventh. Both are 15-1.
There was some shuffling in the Class 4A rankings this week, as the seventh, eighth and ninth-ranked teams all lost and fell out. That would be Linn-Mar, Bettendorf and Urbandale, which actually lost twice.
Joining the 4A poll is Des Moines Roosevelt, Muscatine and Ankeny, who take up the last three spots. Cedar Falls (15-0) and Waukee Northwest (14-2) remain a clear one and two, though Northwest lost over the weekend to the No. 2-ranked team in Wisconsin’s largest class.
It’s the same 10 teams in the Class 1A poll, with the most notable change coming after Bellevue beat Bellevue Marquette in a city showdown this past Saturday. That brought the Comets up from seventh to fifth in the rankings, with the Defenders dropping from sixth to eighth.
