Cedar Rapids chiropractor faces disciplinary charges
Sep. 11, 2014 3:50 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids chiropractor has been charged by the state with unethical conduct after requesting patients' billing records without a clinical justification for the requests.
The Iowa Board of Chiropractic will hold a disciplinary hearing Oct. 8 for Bruce Weisbein, founder of My Chiro - a walk-in chiropractic clinic with locations in Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.
According to state documents, Weisbein regularly requests the records of new patients from their former chiropractors. To do this, he has the patient fill out an 'Authorization for the Use and Disclosure of Protected Health Information” form, which includes a section detailing the type of records sought, including clinical records, imaging films and billing records.
However, Weisbein and his employees routinely complete the form themselves, except for the patient's signature, according to the state.
The state said Weisbein frequently requested patient's billing records without their knowledge and that patients did not understand the purpose for the request.
Weisbein has been charged with engaging in unethical conduct or practice harmful or detrimental to the public as well as making misleading, deceptive, untrue or fraudulent representations in the practice.
