FORT DODGE – No. 5 Ackley AGWSR rallied from a 3-0 deficit with six runs in the top of the seventh and held on for a 6-5 victory over No. 8 Bellevue Marquette in the Class 1A state softball quarterfinals Tuesday.
The Mohawks (30-6) scored two runs in their half of the seventh on a Bella Berthel sac fly and Blake Banowetz two-out RBI single, but came up short.
It's the second straight year Marquette has been eliminated from championship contention by AGWSR in the quarterfinals, falling 2-0 last season.
Three of the first four AGWSR batters in the seventh connected for hits and the other reached on an error to cut the score to 3-2. Jami Johnson's single tied it and Morgan Kappel's single put the Cougars in front. Jodi Johnson added a two-RBI single and, all told, AGWSR connected for six runs on six hits and an error after being shut out by Nicole Blum the previous six innings.
Marquette took an early 2-0 lead on McKenna Michels' two-RBI single, then made it 3-0 when Caroline Herrig scored from third on Caylee Ploessl's groundout in the sixth.
Marquette will face Lynnville-Sully in Wednesday morning's consolation bracket, while AGWSR meets River Valley in Thursday's semifinals.
