IOWA CITY - Scratch the 'interim.”
Garrett Hartwig is the varsity football coach at Iowa City West, plain and simple.
The school elevated Hartwig in an announcement Tuesday morning.
'Coach Hartwig emerged from a competitive pool of applicants as a person of strength and integrity,” West Athletics Director Scott Kibby said in a statement released by the school. 'He has the admiration and respect of our student-athletes and community. He has our confidence to provide the leadership our program requires.”
Hartwig guided the Trojans to a 7-5 record last season. They reached the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs. West rallied to upset Linn-Mar, 38-34, in the second round.
He served as West's defensive coordinator before head coach Brian Sauser moved on, then took the head job on an interim basis last year. He played collegiate football at the University of South Dakota as a defensive back, and was a team captain.
