Attempt to help butterflies failed

To the editor:
Every once in a while I try to help Mother Nature, or at least do her no harm.
I was touched by the plight of the Monarch butterflies, so this year I planted milkweed in my garden instead of tomatoes. The plants were looking good and doing great.
Then they were attacked by a bunch of caterpillars that were eating all the leaves. I just gave up and tore all the plants out.
As someone a long time ago once said, 'Let them eat kale.”
