CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids police have made an arrest in a potentially life-threatening shooting.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired around 2:30 a.m. Monday at 3105 Stoney Point Road SW. Responding officers found a 37-year-old victim that suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso. Police have described the man's wound as 'potentially life-threatening.'
Based on their investigation, police identified 26-year-old Cornelius D. Perry as the shooter. Public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said Perry lives in the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. Police don't believe the victim lived there.
Authorities are still investigating what led to the shooting, Buelow said. A number of shootings this year have been tied to two rival organizations locked in some disagreement.
'That's part of the ongoing investigation,' he said. 'At this point, there is no reason to believe this is part of any ongoing dispute.'
Buelow said a handgun that police believe belonged to Perry was recovered.
Perry was arrested and now faces charges of willful injury and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon. If convicted, Perry could face up to 12 years in prison.
He remains in custody at the Linn County Jail.
