May. 24, 2015 11:22 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - A semi-trailer carrying anhydrous ammonia overturned near Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids Sunday afternoon.
A post on the Cedar Rapids Fire Department's Facebook page said the driver of the semi was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after his semi overturned while making a turn at the intersection of 76th Avenue SW and Sixth Street SW.
There was no spill as a result of the crash and no evacuations are necessary, according to the fire department.
Firefighters were waiting for the owners of the trucking firm to bring representatives and equipment to remove the ammonia as of around 6 p.m. The company officials were expected to arrive before 11 p.m.
Once at the scene, offloading the anhydrous ammonia is expected to take another three hours, leaving firefighters in the area of the crash until 2 a.m. at the latest, the fire department said.
Firefighters asked those with travel through the area to seek an alternate route for the safety of first responders.
