Cedar Rapids police are looking for a second vehicle allegedly involved in a shooting that preceded a high-speed chase Wednesday evening.
Police received a report of shots fired at 5565 C St. SW at 6:39 p.m. Witnesses told police that two vehicles were involved in the incident, though how they were involved is not immediately clear. While one vehicle was later found by a Linn County Sheriff's deputy in Ely and its occupants were arrested following a chase, the occupants of the second vehicle have not been located, public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said.
'That's part of the ongoing investigation,” Buelow said.
Following the shooting, a Linn County deputy located one of the suspect vehicles - a pickup truck - in Ely at 6:42 p.m. Authorities said the driver of the truck refused to stop and a chase ensued. Speeds reached 100 mph during the chase, which Sheriff Brian Gardner said lasted six minutes.
The chase was joined by officers from the Linn County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol and Mount Vernon, Lisbon, North Liberty and Iowa City police departments. The pursuit ended when the driver crashed in Solon, but the five occupants fled on foot. They were apprehended a short time later. A Linn County deputy was injured during the foot chase. Gardner said it's too early to tell the extent of the deputy's shoulder injury.
'He's currently off work on medical restriction,” Gardner said.
The five occupants of the vehicle were identified as Kaven W. Parks, 24; Aaron M. Scott, 23; Marcus D. Wallace, 18; and Marcus L. Long, 27; all of Cedar Rapids, and a 15-year-old juvenile. Parks - the driver - was charged with eluding and numerous traffic offenses. All five occupants were charged with interference with official acts causing injury to a peace officer.
Gardner said deputies recovered a handgun following the chase, but it's too early in the investigation to know if it was used in the Cedar Rapids shooting.
Buelow said the men arrested have not been charged in connection with the shooting.
'But, that's part of the continuing investigation,” he said.
