“Herky On Parade” returning to Iowa City area

IOWA CITY - It won't take long for visitors to the Iowa City area to notice more than 80 Herky statues around Johnson County.

The newly painted six-foot statues were officially unveiled Monday morning. It's the second ever 'Herky On Parade,” a widely popular public art project.

More than 50 artists, local and regional, have spent the last several months preparing the statues for public viewing.

'It's a really exciting time for us all,” said Josh Schamberger, president of the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Herky statues can be found throughout downtown Iowa City, the University of Iowa campus, Coralville, North Liberty, The Eastern Iowa Airport and several other points in the Corridor.

Volunteers and community members helped unveil the statues simultaneously Monday morning, including Pat McCaffery, son of Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery, who helped unveil a statue with a small tribute to his recent battle with a cancerous tumor.

The statues will remain on display throughout the summer.
