Former Iowa Falls bank teller will plead to embezzlement

Mar. 26, 2015 6:22 pm
A former bank teller will plead guilty Wednesday in federal court to embezzling over $144,000 from the Iowa Falls State Bank.
Teresa Ann Kobriger is charged with one count of embezzlement by a bank employee. She is accused of embezzling about $144,181 from the bank while she was employed as a client associate supervisor or head teller from December 2008 to December 2012, according to the plea agreement filed in U.S. District Court.
According to court documents, Kobriger stole the cash from her own teller drawer and the bank vault. She was in charge of all the tellers, bank vault, and ordering cash for the bank. In order to conceal the thefts, she altered a spreadsheet used to track cash going into and out of the bank vault.
According to the agreement, Kobriger would alter the 'cash in” and 'cash out” tickets to reflect that cash had been transferred from the vault to an ATM but this cash wasn't transferred. In June 2012, she started making false entries for the 'Test” drawer of the bank's new teller system in order to conceal the thefts, according to documents.
Bank employees discovered the cash discrepancies in January 2014, according to the plea.
Kobriger faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine to be determined based on twice the gross gain or gross loss, whichever is greater.
She also will be ordered to pay at least $144,181 in restitution to the bank or its insurer and be required, before sentencing, to correct her tax returns for the unreported income from 2008-12.
