Hawkeye finalist charged with OWI

May. 4, 2010 3:36 pm
According to University of Iowa Department of Public Safety documents, University of Iowa NCAA finalist wrestler Montell Marion was arrested at 2:16 a.m. Monday and charged with operating while intoxicated (1st offense), which is listed in police report as a serious misdemeanor. Marion, who turned 22 Monday, was witnessed driving down Washington from Clinton Streets, which is relegated to bus and bike traffic only, according to the police report. It also states that Marion failed to use a turn signal at the intersection of Washington and Madison. The car allegedly had no front license plate as well.
The arresting officer detected alcohol on Marion, who admitting to drinking. Marion then was asked to undergo sobriety tests, which he repeatedly failed according to the arresting officer's report. Marion then submitted a breath test which resulted in a .151 blood alcohol content - almost twice the legal limit of .08 in Iowa.
Marion has had other legal issues, including a charge of willful injury - causing serious injury on April 25, 2005 in Des Moines.
Marion, a two-time state champion attending West Des Moines Valley and Des Moines Roosevelt High Schools, was the 141-pound runner-up for the Hawkeyes this year. He went 27-6 and placed third at the Big Ten tournament. He also earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors for a upset win over Oklahoma State's Jamal Parks in a January dual at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
He fielded a question about past transgressions and Marion answered them well. He owned up to the mistakes he made before and was focused on just learning from them. Unfortunately, he was caught during a lapse in judgment. Interesting remarks at 1:46 where he admits he's "not a perfect person" and at 2:00 when he discusses representing the UI in a positive way.
The UI announced that Marion would be suspended indefinitely, leaving many to think Marion's time with the Hawkeyes might be done.
“Montell has been suspended, pending a review of the situation," Iowa Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Fred Mims said in a news release Tuesday afternoon."We hope to have a statement tomorrow regarding his future at the University of Iowa.”
