White, William R. “Pete”
William R. “Pete” White, 85, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the First Christian Church in Vinton with the Rev. Connie Wacht officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg with graveside military rites conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton.
A memorial fund has been established.
William R. White, known to family and friends as “Pete,” was born Feb. 5, 1927, near Shellsburg, to Charley E. and Elsie (Rambo) White. During World War II, he served his nation in the U.S. Army and was a member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton. On June 8, 1947, he was united in marriage to Irene Tumilty at the Federated Church in Shellsburg.
Pete was a life long member of the Oak Grove Church in Shellsburg and currently a member of First Christian Church in Vinton. He farmed in the Vinton Shellsburg area, was employed at Wilsons and as a rural mail carrier, before retirement in 1992. Pete loved his dog, Eady.
In addition to his wife, Irene of Vinton; he is survived by his sons, Steve (Sue) White of Cedar Rapids and Bill (Jane) White of Vinton; his daughter, Tammy (Barry) Schwartz of Cedar Rapids; his three grandchildren, Jenny (Josh) Wyckoff, Jay White and his friend, Ashley Hudson, and Wally White and fiancee, Gretchen Grutz and her children, Avy and Waylon Grutz; his great-grandchildren, Jaylynn Wyckoff and Brooklyn Wyckoff; and his sister, Ila Mae (Frank) Dulin of Vinton.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers, Claire, Delbert, Boyd and “Vern” White.
