Anna Marie Urban, 92, entered eternal life on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father John Spiegel officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where the Catholic Daughter will recite a rosary at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Church, the Regina Foundation, or to the charity of your choice.
Anna Marie was born Nov. 5, 1920, in St. Paul, Iowa, the daughter of Ed and Mary Denning Mertens. She was a graduate of St. Alphonsus High School and the Burlington Business College. On May 5, 1945, Anna Marie married Casimir M. Urban in Jackson, Miss., where they were both serving in the Army.
Anna Marie honorably served in the Women’s Army Corps as a staff sergeant during World War II. She attended Adjutant General School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. She was proud to take the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with other veterans. Anna Marie and Casimir moved to Iowa City in 1955 from Mount Pleasant.
She was the district manager for Avon Products for over 25 years, retiring in 1979.
Anna Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she served as an usher, greeter, and Eucharistic minister, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, the VFW, American Legion, and the Moose. Most important to Anna Marie was her family.`
Survivors include her three daughters, Ann Kinney of Cedar Rapids, Susan (Dennis) Shinners of Aurora, Colo., and Carol (Bruce) Sundquist of Hot Springs, Ark.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Paul (Joanne) Mertens of Mount Pleasant.
Anna Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1994; and her brothers, Bernard, Henry, Frederick, and Ralph.
