Norman Lee Toland

Norman Lee Toland, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Hillside Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Kirk Statler and the Rev. Stephen Descalzo officiating. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the church.

Norman is survived by his wife, Karol; daughters, Laura (Stephen) Descalzo of Galesburg, Ill., and Lisa Toland of Marion, Ind.; grandchildren, Silas and Rebekah Descalzo; a sister, Nancy Toland of Orlando, Fla.; and brothers, Clark (Sharon) Toland of Austin, Minn., and Gregg (Jean) Toland of Coral Gables, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Norman was born March 29, 1936, in Spencer, Iowa, to Glenn and Wanda Toland. He graduated from Lake Center Township Consolidated School in 1954. He attended Bridgewater College and Iowa State University. He began working at Rockwell Collins in 1959, retiring in 1991. In 1973, he married Karol Bengtson on July 27 in Cedar Rapids. He was a longtime member of Hillside Wesleyan Church.

Norman loved spending time with family and friends as well as traveling and history. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and tending his berries. He was an avid student of the Bible and had recently begun learning Greek.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
