Elmer D. Snell

Elmer D. Snell, 91, of Walford, died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. A visitation will be held Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, Cedar Rapids. Private graveside services will be held.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of 52 years; children, Susan Luchinske of Walla Walla, Wash., Richard (Lauri) Luchinske of Cedar Rapids, Sherry (Stephen) Abrams of Littleton, Colo., Cindy (Eldon) Michalec of College Place, Wash., Jonathan Luchinske of Fairfax, Timothy (Karen Tate) Snell of Hebron, Maine, Darla (Joseph) Toulouse of Avon Park, Fla., and Melanie Snell of Marion; siblings, Evelyn Brecht of Norway, Herbert Snell of Fairfax, Jack Snell of Henderson, Nev., and Mary Lou (David) Selzer of Fairfax; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel; and eight siblings.

Elmer was born March 1, 1921, in Fairfax, to Charles and Mary (Vanous) Snell. He married Shirley Luchinske on Dec. 16, 1960. Elmer and Shirley farmed in the Fairfax area for many years. He was also a welder for FMC, retiring in 1986. Elmer was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on an LST in the Marshall Islands. He was a member of the American Legion Pekomy Post, LST Association, Farm Bureau, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

A memorial fund has been established.
