Ruth R. Smith

Ruth R. Smith, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a short illness. Private niche side services on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum Columbarium. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Survivors include a daughter, Sara (David) Smith Gates of Mount Vernon and Las Vegas, Nev.; and a son, Brad and his fiancee, D’Anne Hotchkiss of New Jersey.

She is also survived by two grandchildren, Matthew (Jade) Burgess and Lindsey (Mark) Hocker all of Mount Vernon; and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Andrew Jr. and David; one sister, Ellen Rasley Piper; and a brother, James Rasley Jr.

Ruth was born on Jan. 30, 1921, in Vinton, the daughter of James and Mabel Schlotfelt Rasley. She married Andrew G. Smith on Dec. 26, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo. Andy passed away in 1983.

Ruth was a homemaker as well as the G.M. and president of Smithfield Recording Studio, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Elmcrest Country Club, the Reserve Officers Association and did volunteer work at the Red Cross.

Ruth enjoyed playing golf, ballroom dancing with her husband Andrew, swimming and had been the Cedar Rapids Tennis Champ in her youth. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Red Cross in Ruth’s name.
