Steven B. Smid, 60, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at his home. Funeral Mass: 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. The Rev. David Beckman will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Survivors include his daughter, Melissa (Thomas) Boston, and two grandchildren, Dezman and Desirae Burkett, all of Ankeny; and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, LeaAnn Knecht.
Steven was born Oct. 9, 1952, in Iowa City, the son of William and Gwendolyn Teefe Smid. He attended University High, graduating in 1970, and then attended ISU. Steve worked with Preferred Risk in Des Moines before joining Intertrade L.T.D. in 1986. Steve was nationally regarded as the foremost expert in after market avionics in America. He was currently employed as an executive of MidAmerica Aerospace.
Steve was a member of the Bridge Club of Des Moines and was a life master in duplicate bridge. Steve competed in Seattle with an Iowa team at the highest levels of Competitive Bridge. He was an avid Hawkeye fan, voracious reader, cross word wizard, and golfer. Steve was blessed with an absolutely encyclopedic memory. He was a member of the X Club and attended St. Matthew Catholic Church.
Steve will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
