Sieren, Evelyn
Evelyn Sieren was born Aug. 24, 1918, near Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Israel and Christena (Gray) Hoxworth. She died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Mercy Iowa City at the age of 94 years.
Evelyn worked for the American Red Cross during World War II. On Feb. 19, 1946, she was united in marriage to Wilfrid Peiffer in Washington. They made their home near Van Horne, where they farmed. Wilfrid died April 1, 1968. On June 8, 1974, she was united in marriage to Albert Sieren in Van Horne. They made their home in Keota.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary, Garden Club and the Birthday Club. Evelyn also volunteered at Maplewood Manor for 11 years. She enjoyed making crafts and spending time with family.
Evelyn is survived by five daughters, Julia Miller (Duane) of Blairstown, Joyce St. John of Cedar Rapids, Marilyn Sieren (Charlie) of Keota, Linda Mather (Jack) of Cedar Rapids and Elizabeth Papesh (Dean) of Hartwick; three stepdaughters, Diana Vittetoe (Ed) of Washington, Rosie Vittetoe (Leo) of Washington and Mary Lou Bower of Oskaloosa; six stepsons, Donnie Sieren (Edna) of Keota, Bob Sieren (Katherine) of Davenport, Jim Sieren (Connie) of Keota, Denny Sieren of Keota, Jerry Sieren (Gail) of New Harmony, Utah, and Charlie Sieren (Marilyn) of Keota; 17 grandchildren; 37 stepgrandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 58 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a nephew, Harold Hoxworth (Janet) of Norway.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Wilfrid and Albert; a brother, Ralph; a sister, Velda Lewis; a son-in-law, James St. John; and a stepdaughter-in-law, Dolores Sieren.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. The Rev. Charles Fladung will officiate. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington. Powell Funeral Home in Keota, is handling arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established for Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church, Camp Courageous, and Iowa City Hospice.
