Lucy Irene Rohret, 86, of Oxford, died peacefully at home on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove with the Rev. Edmund Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and a vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation also will be held from 10 a.m. Thursday until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or to The Cosgrove Institute.
Lucy was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Columbus City, Iowa, the daughter of Lee “L.O.” and Eva (Herring) Files. She grew up in Columbus Junction and after multiple moves, graduated from University High School in 1944. Lucy met the love of her life, Earlis Rohret, at the age of 15 and a few years later, the two were married on Aug. 6, 1946 in Iowa City at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Lucy was a stay-at-home mother and a farm wife, which was no small feat with seven children. She not only helped raised the kids, but also worked diligently on the family farm. Her family was her life. She was also known for her fabulous cooking and baking and for her love of growing tomatoes. Lucy was also a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Peter’s Altar & Rosary, The National Catholic Society of Foresters, The Double D Bridge Club, The Birthday Club and was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital for over 15 years.
Survivors include her husband, Earlis of Oxford; seven children, daughters, Linda Vikel of Oxford, Joan Mooney (Larry) of Iowa City, Karen Peterson (Al) of Iowa City, Kathy Mahon (Bill) of Cary, Ill. and Marge Amelon (Jeff) of Iowa City, son, Gary Rohret of Rochester, Minn., and daughter, Amy Bowman (Curt) of Iowa City; one brother, Sherman Files of Tiffin; one sister, Lila Flansburg of Tiffin; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Joanna Ranshaw; a brother, Douglas Files; and a son-in-law, Gerald Vikel.
