James R. Newman

James R. Newman, 87, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Meadow View Care Center.

James was born March 25, 1925, in Marion, Iowa, to Delbert and Caroline (Schmit) Newman. James graduated from Roosevelt High School and soon after went to work at Quaker Oats, where he eventually met Esther Meyer.They were married Oct. 1, 1950, in Cedar Rapids.

Services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where the visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.

James is survived by his son, Randy Newman (Misty) of Ely; grandson, Joshua of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Dorothy Rapps of Cedar Rapids and Margaret Myers of Cedar Rapids; nephew, James Buttleman (Jerry) of Cedar Rapids;a host of other family; and a special friend, Margaret Thing of Springville.

James was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Esther; parents; and nephew, Spike Buttleman.

James enjoyed going fishing, drag racing, but most of all working on cars with his son and grandson and going on trips.
