Meyer, Earl R.

Earl R. Meyer, 93, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Atrium Village in Hills. Funeral Mass will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Rev. Steve Witt will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial is planned for Monday, Jan. 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney.

Instead of flowers, Earl requested memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or The Regina Foundation.

Earl was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Gustave and Katherine (Kuhn) Meyer. Raised in Sigourney, Earl served for four years in the Army Air Corp as a lieutenant colonel during World War II. Moving to Iowa City in 1948, he began work at Barron Motor Supply, retiring in 1983 after 34 years of service as store manager.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City Elks Lodge and the University of Iowa Alumni Association.

Surviving are cousins, including George House of Sigourney and Larry Hoffman of St. Joseph, Ill.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Martina “Marty” Meyer.
