Hanson, George James
George James Hanson was born Aug. 16, 1924, near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Thomas E. And Mary E. (Armstead) Hanson. He graduated from Parnell High School. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp from February 1944 to November 1945. George was united in marriage to Roberta H. Edwards on Sept. 3, 1949, in Holbrook. He farmed east of Williamsburg all of his life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 in Williamsburg. George and Roberta enjoyed wintering in Arizona George died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at his home in Phoenix, Ariz., at the age of 88 years.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta of Phoenix; their children, Mike Hanson and Roberta S. Hanson, both of Phoenix; three grandchildren, Chad (Angela) Hanson of Cedar Rapids, Robbie (Brian) Pauly of Mason City and Nicholas Hanson of Phoenix; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Thomas (Sally) Hanson of Denver, Colo.
George was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Terry Hanson; four sisters, Helen Knight, Catherine McDonald, Norma Hanson and Mary Laurine Lower; and two brothers, Clement Hanson and Joseph Hanson.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Father Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, with military rites by the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. There will be a KC Rosary and Prayers Service at 3:30 p.m.
