James E. Grawe

James E. Grawe, 90, of Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

He was born May 24, 1922, in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of Alois Bernard and Irene Margaret (Marron) Grawe. He graduated from the Lawler High School in 1941. James served his country with the United States Navy, a Machinists Mate First Class on the Destroyer, USS Hilary P. Jones during World War II. James served in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and South Pacific Theatres.

On Dec. 17, 1946, James was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae McComb. Together they followed the occupation of farming for many years. James was also a power plant engineer at the Mental Health Institute in Independence for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy of Independence; three nieces and one nephew.

James was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Dorothy Claire Underwood and Bette Jean Heiselman.

Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, by the Rev. Richard Gaul. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment, with military rites: Center Grove Cemetery, Dubuque.
