James Joseph Grant Sr.

James Joseph Grant Sr., 88, of Central City, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Central City, by Father Tony Kruse. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, with a Scripture service beginning at 3:30 p.m. Burial: Mount Clark Cemetery, Central City.

Survivors include his children, James Jr. (Sylvia) Grant of Marion, Greg (Nancy) Grant of Robins, and Renee (Rick) McGuin of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Laura Grant, Dina Thomas, Sheli Eggiman, Nicki Wenzel, Danielle Benge, Patrick Grant, Valerie Grant and Kelly Grant; and seven great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are his siblings, William Grant of Cedar Rapids, Margaret Kula of Marshfield, Wis., Duane (Glenda) Grant of Central City and Don (Darlene) Grant of Bertram; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Michael, who died in infancy.

James was born April 7, 1924, in Prairie Creek, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Esther (Clark) Grant. He graduated from Coggon High School. James married Marvel Sparrgrove, and four children were born to this union. They later divorced. James worked with Nesbit Bottling Company for many years.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in James’ memory.
