Philip Hughes Gallo

Philip Hughes Gallo, 91, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Atkins with the Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating. Interment will be held at St. Stephen’s Cemetery near Atkins. Friends may register at the church from 3 p.m. until service time Friday.

A memorial fund has been established.

Philip was born Nov. 14, 1921, at Marion, to Samuel and Helen (Strickoll) Gallo. During World War II, he served his nation in the United States Army. On Aug. 13, 1945, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth C. “Betty” Greene. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2004.

Prior to his retirement, Philip was employed by the Milwaukee Rail Road. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Atkins. He will be remembered as a kind and gentle man, “a true gentleman.”

He is survived by his children, Gary (Deb) Gallo of Fairfax, Larry (Toni) Gallo of Cedar Rapids, Linda (Norm) Wilson of Winterset and Vicki (Don) Whipple of Van Horne; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by is grandson, Mitch Gallo; and his brother, Virgil Gallo.
