DeWitt, Ken D.
Ken D. DeWitt, 82, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a Masonic service starting at 4 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m., with a half-hour visitation before, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Kendall Duane DeWitt was born July 20, 1930, in Webster County, Neb., the fourth child of George Agustus and Mary Elizabeth Baker DeWitt. They lived on the farm until 1937. In 1937, the family, grandfather and grandmother DeWitt, aunt Edith and Sydney moved to Guide Rock, Neb. Ken attended Guide Rock Public School until his graduation in 1948. He spent 3 ½ years at seminary. He was united in marriage to Jerry Lee Williamson on Sept. 19, 1950. To this union three children were born. They later divorced. Ken married Joan Charlson on Feb. 13, 1993.
He was a member of Crescent Lodge 25, Scottish Rite in Cedar Rapids and the El Kahir Shrine. Ken was a minister at First Christian Church in North English, Lafayette Christian Church, and Delhi Methodist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, working on his pond, cooking, and spending time with the children. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Chiefs fan.
Survivors include his son, Scott (Dawn) DeWitt, and daughters, Karen (James Mattan) Borseth, both of Cedar Rapids, and Elizabeth (Paul Andrew) Mahurin of Marion; brother, Richard DeWitt of Minnesota; long time friend, Glen Smith; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse, Joan; mother-in-law, Irene McNabb; brother, Dennis DeWitt; and two sisters, Hazel Isenhart and Louise Lundstet.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
