Wright Williams commented on the blog post Should Congress rethink cutting food stamp funding? 2 months, 2 weeks ago · View
There are a lot of things that the US House of Representatives should rethink. Many would like to ship the ‘American Taliban’ (Boehner, Ryan, Bachmann, King, etc) off on a permanent junket at the south pole.

It seems to me that DeBoom’s group has wasted its credibility with both the city and the public at large, by pursuing every cat that comes along, instead of focusing on a few worthy cats.
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Is the tiny Blanding’s turtle, one of Iowa’s threatened species, deserving of more public investment to protect? 2 months, 3 weeks ago · View
Another one of those daily conversations that makes one wonder why the Gazette takes any time to post these.

The terms of the contract offered with the last vote have changed: Time to ask for approvals by way of a new vote.
Wright Williams commented on the blog post What do you think of the ‘Cedar Crossings’ concept for Cedar Rapids’ proposed casino? 3 months ago · View
What can I tell from pretty pictures? I see no floor plan. I see no interior elevations. In fact, I see little planning at all: The location of the casino along already congested First Avenue seems problematic to me. Certainly anyone visiting this casino will not like that aspect. The access from the interstate seems [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post What did you think of the Big Ten preseason media poll that picked Iowa to finish fifth in the Legends division? 4 months, 2 weeks ago · View
Fifth? That’s awfully high for a member of the second tier of the “Big 10/how many members are there this year.”
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Why do you think Iowans are buying less beer and more distilled spirits? 4 months, 2 weeks ago · View
“Why do you think Iowans are buying less beer and more distilled spirits?” Because those who would normally only be able to afford beer are busy trying to find enough cash to put gas in their tanks. And those who have something to spend, are blissfully spending it as fast as they can from their [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Do you think municipal golf courses should be handed over to private contractors? 4 months, 3 weeks ago · View
Like Dean above, I don’t believe in handing over public assets to private concerns that live on the dole of the government. (There’s far too much of that going on already both on the ‘right’ and the ‘left’). Obviously golf will never be a money maker, but certainly placing qualified individuals into the management of [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Do you think commuter rail service will ever come to Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area? 5 months ago · View
Everyone loves the idea of traveling for what should be mere pennies to or from Iowa City. But those who have posted ahead of me have made quite valid (and correct) points. I think anyone who is left pushing for this has no idea of the cost of such a venture. The volume of riders [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post What do you think of Iowa’s new traveling trucks tourism project? 5 months, 1 week ago · View
Bricks or GOLD Bricks? I suppose it is all just a ‘State of Minds’. Obviously a few folks at the 90s era Iowa Travel and Tourism office were transferred to the 2013 Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division. But that they chose the ultimate gold bricker to make this announcement is quite comical. I wonder if Dubuque [...]
Sirens will never be obsolete. Cell phone and television based warnings are fine, but when the cell phones are down, and the television can’t receive the TV broadcasts, the sirens may still have backup power and could still be connected to the network that makes them sound. The bigger problem is that when the wind [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Would Monica Vernon be a good Congressional candidate? 6 months, 4 weeks ago · View
As someone who tends to lean toward her side of the aisle, I’m not very enthused about a Monica Vernon candidacy. Quite frankly I think her voting record on the city council will work against her in at least this part of the district which she seeks.
While I echo Tim’s general sentiment which I hope I can paraphrase as , ‘bring it on!’, I wonder if characterizing it as a farmer’s market is also incorrect. Hopefully NO ONE is thinking that New Pi or New Bo has any aspirations to be a farmer’s market. In my opinion, Cedar Rapids is still [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Will Westdale Mall redevelopment plans be successful? 7 months ago · View
I think the ‘Senior Living’ component set next to noisy and busy Williams Boulevard and on the edge of a vast parking area sets a tone for this development. A tone that says, “not well considered.” I also find questionable the three large (apparently) box stores to the east and south of the Younkers store. [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Should there be more workplace inspectors in Iowa? 7 months, 1 week ago · View
The local building inspectors seem to be awfully lax. What guarantees do I have that the ‘workplace inspectors’ are not going to be similarly blind to issues large and small?
Wright Williams commented on the blog post Should state government kick in funding to help expand Iowa passenger rail service? 7 months, 1 week ago · View
No state funds are needed. Just take the payout that the state is receiving from the gambling casinos. That should cover it.
Wright Williams commented on the blog post What do you think of changing some of Cedar Rapids’ major downtown one-way streets to two-way? 7 months, 1 week ago · View
I have to agree with some of the sentiment expressed by John Phelps above. The closing of quite a number of streets in the downtown area has permanently disrupted the flow into downtown. While I don’t believe that changing to two way is going to make traffic flow in the area any better, I do [...]
Wright Williams commented on the blog post What store would you like to see fill the space vacated by Sears at Coral Ridge Mall? 7 months, 3 weeks ago · View
Big LOTS, The Dollar Store, Costco. They all seem to be doing well; unlike these other stores built on a 1930s retail model.
